Tū Tārake

Purpose

Tū Tārake is a leadership development programme designed by our rangatahi research leads for rangatahi Māori.

Its purpose is to advance rangatahi leadership skills through Mātauranga Māori wānanga and meaningful mentorship. Our goal is for these rangatahi to be leaders in their homes, kura and communities. The programmes also assist in fostering identity and connecting rangatahi to their Māoritanga through a range of activities.

The Whakapapa

A ‘whetū tārake’ is a star in the night sky that shines brighter than the rest. Tū Tārake is not only a reference to this star but also a wero for our rangatahi to stand (tū) like and embody the attributes of a whetū tārake within their homes, kura and communities.

Tū Tārake was the name gifted to our programme by one of our cultural advisors Harlem-Cruz Ihaia. It comes from the sentence,

“Te whetū tārake i te rangi”
